The Love You Promised … tuh! Love, what is love? Did he love me? Why me? Why did I have to endure so much? These are just a few of the questions that I continuously asked myself. And I am sure I am not the only one that has asked these questions. But it all boils down to a straightforward question: Did I love myself?

There was forbidden love, sexual assault, domestic abuse, lies, bets, and betrayal, to name a few. But, after all the tests and trials, I have grown to learn that love begins within. I must love myself before I can love somebody else or even expect them to love me. Then there is my sister, who always told me, “As long as you let me do it, I will.” I never quite understood why she kept telling me that before, but I do now. As the saying goes, a person will only do what you allow them to. She told me that if I wanted to be stupid, she would do her, and so would everyone else.

This book helped me to start the process of dealing with emotions that I never tapped into, feelings I did not know I had not dealt with, and open wounds. I had events where I shared some of my experiences but never like this. This book helped me realize that I was still vulnerable and dealing with everything, even things not mentioned in the book. I hope this book helps someone out of a challenging situation. I pray that it saves a life just as God spared mine and allowed me to share my story.

I recently learned that everything I experienced was also my fault. After all, I stayed. After all, I did not do anything about it sooner than later because I thought I could change the outcome. I have also learned that I must accept responsibility for this. I have bought and forgiven all parties involved, including myself; therefore, I present to you memoirs of my pain.

People often ask, “why me,” but the real question is, “Why not you?” In closing, I have realized that love is the beautiful, melanated, thick-build, warm-spirited Queen I see every morning when I look into the mirror. I have known love all along because love is me. I am just elated to say that I am finally blessed to understand what love is.
