What Is PURPLE Mentorship?
Mentorship With Purpose
PURPLE Mentorship provides participants with access to approved adult mentors who support the developmental goals of PURPLE Girls. Mentorship is integrated into the broader PURPLE experience, which may include developmental sessions, H.E.R. Circles, workshops, leadership activities, community service, educational and career exposure, enrichment experiences, guest speakers, and other approved opportunities.
PURPLE Mentorship is not designed to replace a participant's family.

PURPLE Mentorship reflects the same developmental philosophy as PURPLE Girls. Mentors help participants think intentionally about the questions that shape who they are becoming.

Junior mentorship emphasizes positive guidance and strong developmental foundations. Mentors may reinforce areas such as confidence, identity, communication, friendships, boundaries, decision-making, responsibility, healthy relationships, leadership, life skills, and discovering new possibilities.

"Preparing Her for What's Next."
Senior mentorship reflects the greater independence and decisions young women encounter as they approach adulthood. Mentorship may explore identity, personal standards, relationships, independence, financial readiness, education and career planning, leadership, self-advocacy, responsibility, decision-making, and preparation for life beyond high school.

What Does a PURPLE Mentor Do?
Guide. Encourage. Listen. Model. Challenge. Support.
A PURPLE Mentor helps create a consistent, encouraging developmental relationship with a participant within BOW's approved program structure.
A mentor doesn't need a perfect life. But she does need to understand the responsibility that comes with becoming a trusted adult in a young person's life.
What a PURPLE Mentor Is Not
Mentorship Has Boundaries.
A PURPLE Mentor is not a participant's:
Mentors should not attempt to diagnose, investigate, treat, rescue, financially support, or independently manage circumstances outside the mentorship role. When something exceeds a mentor's role, she follows BOW's established procedures.

The Mentor-Mentee Relationship
Connection With Structure.
A mentor can be warm without becoming inappropriate.
She can be available without being accessible every hour of every day.
She can listen without promising secrecy.
She can encourage without controlling.
She can care without becoming responsible for solving everything.

Matching Mentors & Mentees
A Match Should Be Intentional.
Mentor matching should be based on more than simply assigning the next available adult to the next participant. Where practical, BOW may consider factors such as participant developmental needs, interests, personality, goals, mentor strengths, experience, availability, communication style, program level, and other relevant considerations.
A requested mentor or match is not guaranteed. BOW retains responsibility for approving mentorship placements according to program needs, available mentors, and applicable requirements.
Before a Mentor Is Matched
Good Intentions Aren't the Entire Screening Process.
Mentor Application
Background, interests, experience, motivation, availability, and relevant information.
Initial Review
BOW evaluates the application against program requirements.
Interview
Selected candidates discuss their interest, expectations, experience, boundaries, and readiness.
References & Screening
Required reference checks and applicable background/safety screening are completed.
Orientation & Training
Candidates complete required PURPLE and BOW training.
Agreements & Policies
Required conduct, confidentiality, communication, youth-safety, and other applicable documentation is completed.
Final Approval
BOW determines whether the candidate is approved for mentorship.
Matching & Placement
Approved mentors may be matched when an appropriate participant and opportunity are available.
Completing the application or screening process does not guarantee approval or placement.
